90% of parcels in Holland delivered in 24 hours.

90% of the total domestic parcels in the Netherlands (ordered at and delivered to a domestic address) were delivered within one working day in 2018. Same day delivery had a share of only 0.1%. The overall average price for sending a parcel inside Holland in 2018 was € 3.76. 82% of Dutch consumers wanted their parcel delivered at home. Post NL handled 65-70% of the total volume on the Dutch B2C-market for parcel deliveries.

These figures were published recently in a study by the Dutch Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), a government institution supervising fair competition between businesses and protecting consumer interests. In a yearly study, that is carried out since 2016, they report on the situation in the postal and parcel delivery market in the Netherlands. For the parcel delivery market, 6 operators were questioned, covering close to the entire market: Post NL, DHL, DPD, GLS, UPS and TNT.

The 2018 study showed that a total of 351 mn. domestic parcels were handled, 240 mn. of which in the B2C market. Another 153 mn were sent cross-border, either to recipients outside Holland or from addresses abroad to recipients in Holland.

Interesting to know for online retailers, is that 90% of all domestic parcels were delivered within 24 hours in 2018, which makes this the standard for the Dutch e-commerce market. Although a lot of rumour is created around same day delivery, only 0.1% of parcels in Holland is delivered on the same day. Around 9.9% is delivered within 2 or more days. No significant change to 2017 was visible.

82% of Dutch consumers wanted their parcel delivered at home in 2018, making this by far the most popular delivery option. However, a downward trend compared to 2017 is clearly visible here, in favour of other delivery options.

The report also revealed that the overall price for sending a parcel to an address inside the Netherlands was € 3.76 in 2018. This overall price covers all market segments, B2B, B2C and C2X. E-commerce merchants will be particularly interested in prices in the B2C market. Although not mentioned in the report and knowing that prices in parcel delivery strongly depend on parcel volumes (besides weight and size), an average price can be deducted from the data in the report. Prices for cross-border shipments from the Netherlands to consumers in other countries were more than twice as high.
